Difference between moment and torque

Moment and torque are key concepts often encountered by students studying mechanics. These terms also confused students most often because of the similarity between them. There are some similarities between moment and torque but there are noticeable differences too. The difference between them will be explained in this article. What is a couple OR moment? 


In mechanics, a couple refers to two equal and opposite forces, whose line of action is different from a couple. The couple also called a force couple or pure moment.

What is Torque?

The twisting force that causes motion is known as torque refers to the turning effect. The point of the rotation of the object is called the axis of rotation. The concept of torque originated with the studies by Archimedes when ideas of the usage of the levers.

Points on the difference between moment and torque:

  • The moment used in a static application while torque used in dynamic applications.
  • The force acting at a distance to significantly impact the angular velocity of a body about any axis is called torque and the force acting at a distance to have minimal effect on angular velocity is called moment. 
  • The shear stress in the internal stress in case of torque whereas for a moment, the internal stress is bending stress. 
  • The moment comes into play during bending within a plane while torque comes into play during torsion which is about an axis.
  • The moment is considered when the point of application of the force moves in a straight line and the torque is considered when the point of application moves around a circular path. 
  • The symbol of torque is τ and the symbol of the moment is M.
  • The torque is used where there is an availability of a pivot and rotation and moment is produced by any lateral force and used in non-rotational events.
  • Torque is used for measure coupling while the moment is not. 
  • Torque is moment related force while the moment is static force.
